Maroons Beat St. Mary's, 15-9
Strong Second Half Lifts RC to Third Win of the Season
SALEM, VA--After heading into intermission tied with St. Mary’s (MD) College, the Roanoke College women’s lacrosse team used another strong second half to come away with a 15-9 win on Saturday afternoon. Roanoke, who outscored the Seahawks 10-4 in the second half, improve to 3-2 on the season, while St. Mary’s, ranked 16th in the latest IWLCA Division III poll, are 3-5. Leslie Hunt (Baltimore, MD/Towson) tied the score at seven with 18:01 left in the game, and from that point on its was all Maroons. Roanoke went on a 6-0 run to blow the game wide open. The RC defense, which had held the Seahawks scoreless for a span of 12 minutes in the first half, kept SMC off the board for 14 minutes in the second after the Seahawks scored their seventh goal of the game with 19:20 to play. During that time the RC offense capitalized, getting two goals apiece from Hunt and junior Amy Kelaher (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) in the run.
Ten minutes into the game it looked as if St. Mary’s was going to have an easy time with the Maroons. The Seahawks jumped out to a 4-1 lead in those 10 minutes, but were able to get just one more goal during the half. With just 24.4 seconds left in the half, Hunt drew the Maroons even, sending the game into half knotted at five.
Roanoke’s Erin Harding (Hunt Valley, MD/Notre Dame Prep) and Kylie Wernert (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) each scored twice in Roanoke’s comeback in the first half. Sue Digby (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) was another multiple goal scorer for Roanoke, scoring twice and also handing out two assists. Debbie Apazidis (Norwalk, CT/New Canaan) made 10 saves in the RC cage.
Robyn Novak (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) had three goals for the Seahawks, who also got single goals from six other players. Novak scored the first and last goals of the first half for the Seahawks, and then added the first score for SMC in the second frame. Jen Bernhard (Laurel, MD/Laurel) made 16 saves for the Seahawks on the afternoon.
Roanoke travels to Lexington, VA on Tuesday for a showdown with the Generals of Washington & Lee University. Game time is 4:00 pm.
