SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College women’s soccer team ran its winning streak to four games with a 2-0 win over the Eastern Mennonite Royals on Saturday afternoon in Salem. The Maroons, who started off the season 1-2, are now 5-2 on the year and 4-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Royals, who are in just their second season of varsity play, fall to 5-2, 3-2 on the season. Laura Hunter (Charlottesville, VA/Monticello) scored a breakaway goal with 8:31 to go in the first half to give the Maroons all the scoring they would need. RC would add another tally, however, as Shelley Olds (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) scored with just over 32 minutes to go in the game to give the squad the two-goal cushion. Olds’ goal was her 10th in just four games, while Hunter tallied her second of the year.
The Roanoke defense did an outstanding job protecting goalie Kate Enight (Dover, DE/Dover), allowing just six EMU shots on the day. Enright was forced to make saves on five of those shots, while her EMU counterpart, Rochelle Yoder (Norman, IL/Norman Comm. West) made eight stops. Two of Enright's saves came on an EMU breakaway. She stopped the initial shot and then turned aside the rebound effort.
The Maroons host Bridgewater College on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 pm looking to stretch their winning streak to five games.
