Maroons Streak Halted at Eight

RC Falls to Lynchburg, 3-0

SALEM, VA--The nation’s 15th ranked Division III women’s soccer team, the Lynchburg College Hornets, handed the Roanoke College Maroons a 3-0 loss on Thursday afternoon in Salem, VA in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest. The Maroons, who had won eight consecutive matches, fall to 9-3 on the year and 7-1 in conference action, while the Hornets are now 12-2 on the season, 9-0 against ODAC foes. In addition to falling for the first time since September 10th, Roanoke’s loss was also its seventh straight to the Hornets, dating to the 1997 season.

Lynchburg put the game out of Roanoke’s reach in the matter of a 1:48 stretch late in the first half. The Hornets’ Suzanne Weller (Richmond, VA/Cazenovia) stuck in a shot off of an LC free kick near the top of the RC box to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead with 17:17 left in the half. Carrie Webster (Herndon, VA/Herndon) who took the free kick, got an assist on the play. Just 1:48 later, Weller again figured into a Lynchburg goal, this time garnering an assist on a tally from Kacey Crabbe (Reston, VA/Herndon). The Maroons shut the high-powered LC offense down for the rest of the half and a large portion of the second until LC’s Jennifer Clayton (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill) scored on a breakaway with 13:57 left in the match.

Roanoke’s Kate Enright (Dover, DE/Dover) kept the Maroons in the contest, making nine saves on the day, including some on point-blank LC shots. When she was challenged by RC’s lone shot on goal, Lynchburg Kaprece Smith (Neptune, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) was up to the task, stopping an RC breakaway shot. The Hornets held a large 20-7 lead in the shots category during the contest.

The Maroons look to start another winning streak on Sunday as they host the Maryville (TN) College Scots. The game at RC’s Elizabeth Campus starts at 1:00pm.
