SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College women’s soccer team’s season came to an abrupt halt on Tuesday afternoon with a 2-1 loss to Randolph-Macon in the quarterfinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament. The Maroons see their season end with an 11-7-1 overall record, while the Yellow Jackets advance to the semifinals sporting an 11-8 mark. Roanoke was the number two seed in the tournament, Randolph-Macon the seventh seed. The Maroons went up 1-0 in the game with 30:15 left in the first half, but the Yellow Jackets responded with two tallies in the first frame and held on in the second to get the win.
Leslie Hunt (Baltimore, MD/Towson) gave the Maroons their 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. After a Shelley Olds (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) shot hit the crossbar, Hunt collected the rebound and put the ball into a basically ‘empty net.’ The Randolph-Macon keeper could not recover in time from the original shot.
With 11:53 to go in the first half, Randolph-Macon’s Cheryl Dickter (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) drew the Yellow Jackets even with the Maroons with her sixth goal of the season. The Yellow Jackets would then score the game-winning goal with just 1:55 left in the first half. Leanna Van Osten (Winchester, VA/Sherando) served the ball into the box from the right side. After the ball bounced off three different players, RMC’s Liz Skorny (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron) collected it and lobbed it over the RC keeper’s head. The Yellow Jackets would then survive the second half, which included a hit post by RC’s CiCi Castle (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury), to pick up the win.
Randolph-Macon, which has played in all but two ODAC championship games, improves to 9-2-1 all-time against the Maroons in conference tournament play. The loss was just Roanoke’s third in the first round of the ODAC postseason (1985 and 1989).
