SALEM, VA--Leslie Hunt (Baltimore, MD/Towson) and Shelley Olds (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) each scored three goals as the Roanoke College women’s soccer team handled Sweet Briar, 8-0, on Tuesday afternoon. The Maroons, who have outscored SBC, 23-1, over the past two seasons, improve to 10-4 overall and 8-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Vixens fall to 1-12, 0-7 on the year. Hunt led off the game with three consecutive goals, staking the Maroons to an early 3-0 lead. All three of her goals came in the span of 11 minutes and two were on assists by freshman Jessica Germano (Windham, ME/Windham). Melissa Impink (Hopatcong, NJ/Hopatcong) added the Maroons’ fourth goal of the first half, firing in the rebound of an RC shot that bounced off the pipe. In all, the Maroons saw five shots hit the pipes, four coming in the first five minutes of the match.
Much like Hunt controlled the first half, Olds took over the second frame, scoring three consecutive goals of her own. With her three goals, Olds now has 18 on the season, which ties a Roanoke College single-season record. One more goal, and Olds will break the record which she currently holds with Alison Mock (1987). CiCi Castle (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) had assists on Olds’ first two goals of the second half. Olds would figure into the final RC score of the day as well, sending a crossing pass that was headed in by Donna Roberston (Roanoke, VA/Northside).
The Maroon defense was superb against the Vixens, not allowing a shot in the contest. The Maroons held a decisive 39-0 lead in the shot column and an 11-0 lead in the corner kick category. This marked the first time in RC women’s soccer history that two players have recorded hat tricks in the same game.
The Maroons travel to Virginia Beach, VA on Saturday to play the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins. The game on the shore is set for 1:00 pm as the Maroons look to pick up their ninth conference win.
