SALEM, VA--Junior Cori Grant (Signal Mt., TN/GPS) made a grand debut this season, scoring a goal to lift the Roanoke College women’s soccer team to 1-0 victory over Sewanee on Sunday afternoon in Salem. The Maroons improve to 11-6-1 on the season, while the Tigers return to Tennessee with a 9-6-1 record. Grant had missed Roanoke’s first 17 games of the season with a foot injury, but returned to the lineup today in the second half. In the game’s 73rd minute, she scored the only goal of the game, tapping in a Shelley Olds (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) crossing pass. Olds had carried the ball to the end line on the right side after taking a pass at the top of the box from Debbie Pauletta (Grasonville, MD/Queen Anne’s County), who also earned an assist on the play.
The Maroons outshot the Tigers, 13-7, on the day. Sewanee keeper Lauren Gilbert (Greensboro, NC/Grimsely) made seven saves in the day, while Kate Enright (Dover, DE/Dover) made four stops for the Maroons.
Roanoke will next host the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament. The Maroons are the second seeded team heading into the tournament. An official game time has not yet been set, although ODAC guidelines list the start time as 2:30 pm. The game will be played on RC’s Elizabeth campus field. In the regular season meeting this season, the Maroons defeated the Yellow Jackets, 3-2, in Ashland, VA behind two goals from Olds. This is the second consecutive season the Maroons head into the conference postseason as the number-two seed.
