Wi-Fi Network Access
Roanoke College has created a Wi-Fi
network in all academic buildings, Colket Center and Fintel
Library to provide additional access to network resources
on campus. With a Wi-Fi network card in a laptop, students
may now access the network while studying in the library, between
classes, or while taking a break in the student center.
To see where Wi-Fi access points
are
located, as well as classroom
coverage, take a look at the
Wi-Fi Coverage Map.
Also, you can see coverage
rates by individual classrooms.
If you are experiencing problems
with connectivity, look at some tips & troubleshooting
suggestions.
Students will continue using wired
network access in the residence halls. Information Technology
recommends that students purchase laptops with at least an integrated wired
network port. Some laptops may be purchased with both wired and Wi-Fi capabilities.
Wi-Fi access on campus is based on the 802.11b
standard and will run on 2.4 GHz radio frequency at speeds up to 11 Mbps.
Access to
the Roanoke College Wi-Fi network will require an 802.11b or 802.11g compliant
Wi-Fi card in your computer. If you are in need of an external wireless card for
your laptop, we recommend purchasing Netgear. Prices for wireless network cards
usually begin around $50.00.
Compact Flash Wi-Fi cards are also available
for PocketPC based handheld
computers. Connection to the Wi-Fi network from the
coverage area will be possible with these
devices.
NOTE: Due to the nature of radio waves and the number of
possible connections, speed and network availability may vary. If you
experience problems in a covered academic building try relocating to a different
part of the building.
