FACULTY PROFILE: DR. ANITA TURPIN
Dr.
Anita Turpin, chair of the English Department, began her study of English
at Union College in Barbourville, KY where she received a four-year Colonel
Harlon B. Sanders Kentucky Fried Chicken Scholarship.
She continued expanding her knowledge of English and Drama
at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL where she received
both her Masters and Ph.D. While at Southern Illinois University she
focused her studies on Modern British Literature, Modern American Drama,
and Performance of Literature. She has been a part of the Roanoke College
community for nearly 16 years, and this is her second year as Chair of
the English Department.
Dr. Turpin teaches a variety of courses here at Roanoke
College including Senior Seminar, Appalachian Literature, Modern Drama,
Irish Literature and the British Literature Survey. She also teaches
several communications courses such as Performance of Literature, Public
Speaking, Mass Media, and Principles of Communication.
When asked what her favorite thing about teaching is,
she responded “What I like about teaching is the fact that I get
to continue being a student.” She continued by saying that she
loves teaching at Roanoke College because it is small enough that she
is able to get to know many of her students very well. She also portrayed
her love for the location of Roanoke College in Salem because this area
reminds her most of her Eastern Kentucky home.
