FACULTY PROFILE: DR. MARK MILLER
He has been a member of the Roanoke College faculty since 1979, and he has been the Chair of the History Department for 15 years. He enjoys his duties as a member of the Dean’s Council which enables him to help shape the department by hiring talented faculty with various fields of study. Dr. Miller teaches a variety of history courses including Civil War, American Revolution, and Historical Methods. He also teaches Senior Seminar with topics including 19th Century Disasters, American Violence, 19th Century Leisure Time and Amusements, and also Richard Nixon. His favorite thing about teaching is “seeing the lights go on. There is nothing more rewarding than watching the connection as students progress and monitoring their success from start to finish.” He enjoys working at Roanoke College for many reasons. He feels privileged to be a part of a wonderful community in which he comfortably raised two children. He also appreciates a program where he is surrounded by great colleagues as well as one that prides itself in caring about the students. After being born and raised in Los Angeles, Salem has been a great and fun experience “that any historian would love!” Dr. Miller is married to Linda Miller, College Archivist,
and has two daughters.
