FISHWICK
PROFESSORSHIP
Roanoke College is pleased to announce
the appointment of Dr. Robert Schultz as the new holder of the John
P. Fishwick Professorship in
English. The
Fishwick Professorship
was created in honor of Mr. John P. Fishwick, who served on the Roanoke
College Board of Trustees for eight years and in 1971 was awarded an
honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the College in recognition of
his long and enthusiastic devotion to the liberal arts.
Schultz comes to us from Luther College, in
Decorah, Iowa, after almost 20 years as a distinguished teacher and
scholar. Schultz is
a summa cum laude graduate of Luther College. He earned an MFA in Creative
Writing, a Masters in English, and a Ph.D, in English all from Cornell
University. He is an expert in Twentieth-Century British and American
Literature and also a published poet, fiction writer, and essayist. We
welcome him to our community.

Award of Tenure and Promotion
to
Associate Professor
Dr. Whitney Leeson
Whitney Leeson completed her B.A. at The College of William and Mary,
and her M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Virginia. Her academic
specialty is historical anthropology. At Roanoke she teaches courses
in the Middle Ages and serves as associate book review editor for the
Sixteenth Century Journal.
Promotion to Tenure
Dr. Laura O’Toole
Laura O’Toole is chair of the Sociology Department
and teaches courses in work and occupations, complex organization,
and sex and
gender. She is the co-author of two books and numerous articles and
book reviews. She received her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from the University
of Delaware and formerly was on the faculty of Guilford College, where
she was also chair of the Sociology and Anthropology Department.
Promotion to Full Professor
Dr. Gary Gibbs
Gary Gibbs earned his Ph.D. at the University of Virginia after completing
his B.A. and M.A. at the University of Florida. Gary serves as the
chief book review editor of the Sixteenth Century Journal and has published
articles and made numerous presentations on sixteenth-century English
history, especially parish church organizations in the Tudor era.
Dr. Joshua Rubongoya
Born
in Uganda, Joshua Rubongoya earned his B.A. at Markerere University
in Political Science and
Philosophy
and his M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Denver in International
Relations. He is completing a book manuscript on political legitimacy
in Uganda and has published articles and presented papers on the
Women’s Movement in Uganda.
Dr. Hans Zorn
Hans Zorn holds a B.A. from Valparaiso
University, a M.Div. from Christ Seminary-Seminex, a M.A. from St.
Louis University, and
a
Ph.D. from Notre Dame. Hans teaches courses in philosophy and the
philosophy of religion. He was awarded the 2004 Dean’s Council
Award for Professional Service.
