GRANTS

Alcohol Intervention Grant

Brian Clark, Residence Life Area Coordinator, and Tom Turner, Director of Campus Safety, recently received a grant from Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) to develop new campus education initiatives. The initiatives will bring entertaining speakers to campus, offer enhanced intervention training to Resident Advisors, and target high-risk campus groups in a proactive prevention-based program.

According to Clark, the program will “allow us to offer engaging, interactive programming that creates an environment where normal drinking behavior is not defined by heavy drinkers and students are encouraged by their peers to participate in alternative social activities.” The program will include guest speakers throughout the year; ABC’s Training Intervention ProcedureS (TIPS) program for Residence Life and Greek leaders; and Something of Value, a values-based approach to risk management education for collegians. The program should educate our students that drinking can lead to dangerous situations, that being in college doesn’t entitle one to drink, and that there are real consequences to choosing to drink underage and in excess.

NCAA Grant

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has awarded Roanoke College a one-year grant designed to encourage and motivate inner city middle students to excel on and off the playing field. The program, Scoring Points On & Off the Court, will be directed by Deneen Evans, Director of Multicultural Affairs.

The grant activities will focus on developing mentoring relationships between African-American college athletes and inner-city middle school athletes. The program will feature a viewing of the movie Coach Carter by 50 middle school athletes and their college mentors. One month later, Coach Ken Carter will deliver his talk A Slam Dunk Lesson in Accountability & Leadership to the group. The program also will include workshops on the college admissions process and NCAA guidelines.
