RC Student Interns with First Lady Laura Bush

Andrea Taylor and her mom at the White House.
Andrea Taylor, Senior International Relations major from Roanoke, VA, completed an internship in December with First Lady Laura Bush's scheduling office. Her work time was divided between the East Wing of the White House and a building on G Street in Washington, D.C. Taylor began the internship in September. Her duties included handling scheduling requests and correspondence and other assigned projects which included updating a travel database.

Taylor had the exciting opportunity to meet President Bush and the First Lady, whom she's admired for years. She met several Olympic athletes who visited the White House, sat in the President’s box during two events at the Kennedy Center and saw President Bush give his acceptance speech in November. Taylor had this to say about the First Lady, "She's so down-to-earth”. Her co-workers, a group of young, hard-working women, made the internship even more special, Taylor said. They always maintained a positive attitude even when they were stressed out. Taylor lived in Arlington in housing provided by the Lutheran College Washington Semester, a program that assists students at Lutheran colleges who plan to study in Washington. Much of her free time was spent in museums and sightseeing.

After graduating a year early in May with a major in international relations, Taylor said she wants to move back to the Washington area. She hopes to utilize what she learned during the internship to find a job at the White House or on Capitol Hill.
