ROOM LOTTERY UPDATE

The Residence Life staff is busy preparing for Room Lottery and Selection (RL&S) for the 2005-2006 academic year. RL&S is the process by which your son or daughter will choose a room for the following year and by which a limited number of students will be allowed to move off-campus.

Each February we project the number of residents for the following year. If the projected number exceeds the residence hall capacity, we are able to allow a limited number of students to reside off-campus. A lottery is then held to determine which students will be given permission to move off-campus. Because Roanoke College is primarily a residential campus, and in order to fill our residence halls to capacity, full-time students not selected in the off-campus lottery or those who do not participate in the off-campus lottery are required to live on-campus unless they have lived in the Roanoke Valley area (within 30 miles of campus) for at least six months preceding the date of first enrollment, are married, live with relatives, are 23 years old (before the beginning of the term they desire to live off-campus), they are a military veteran, or they have been given prior approval by the Office of Student Affairs.

Your son or daughter may have expressed the desire to live off-campus next year. However, no students have been given approval at this time. It is very important that students make no commitments, such as signing a lease, unless they obtain authorization through the off-campus lottery scheduled for March 2005. Signing an off-campus lease will not release a student from his or her on-campus obligations.

If you need further information, please feel free to contact a member of the Residence Life staff at (540) 375-2308.
