2.7       PROMOTION

2.7.1    QUALIFICATIONS FOR PROMOTION BY RANK

Exceptions to the following policies will have the concurrence of the Faculty Personnel Committee, the Dean, and the President.

Before receiving promotion between ranks, a full-time faculty member must meet the following professional qualifications:

2.7.1.1             ASSISTANT PROFESSOR:  have demonstrated potential for teaching effectiveness.  Immediate promotion from Instructor to the rank of Assistant Professor may be granted upon completion of the terminal degree.

2.7.1.2             ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR:  (a) have the qualifications of Assistant Professor, (b) have served at least six years at the Assistant Professor rank or the equivalent, and (c) have clearly demonstrated effectiveness in the category of teaching and advising, and active involvement in professional development and service at the agreed upon workload balance.

2.7.1.3             PROFESSOR:  (a) hold a terminal degree, (b) have served at least seven years at the Associate Professor rank or the equivalent, and (c) have clearly demonstrated effectiveness in teaching and advising, professional development, and service at the agreed upon workload balance, and have proven outstanding in (i.) the category of teaching and advising and in (ii.) professional development or service at the agreed upon workload balance.

2.7.2    PROCEDURE FOR PROMOTION

2.7.2.1             Nominations for promotion may be made either by the faculty member or by the department chair or Dean at any time after the candidate has completed the required number of years in rank.  In exceptional cases, the Dean may recommend a candidate for early consideration for promotion based upon previous service elsewhere, but in every case an individual must have served at least two years at Roanoke.  The nomination must be in writing to both the Dean of the College and the chair of the Faculty Personnel Committee, and must be submitted no later than April 15 of the year before the candidate is to be considered.  The department chair must notify all eligible faculty members whether or not he or she intends to nominate them for promotion no later than April 1.

2.7.2.2             The candidate prepares a dossier to be submitted to the chair by September 15 and then to the Dean no later than October 1.  Dossier preparation and procedure after submission of the dossier are identical to those outlined for tenure (see Section 2.6.4).

2.7.3    EVALUATION AREAS FOR PROMOTION

The evaluation areas for promotion are the same as those for tenure (see Section 2.6.4).

2.7.4    PROCEDURE FOLLOWING SUBMISSION BY NOMINEE

The procedure is the same as that for tenure (see Section 2.6.4).
