3.5 ACADEMIC SERVICES
3.5.1 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Faculty, staff, and students have access to a world of information via the Internet, campus and worldwide e-mail, and public access library catalogs. Information Technology also provides training workshops throughout the year in the basic PC packages, such as Excel, Word, Blackboard, e-mail, etc. For more information, please contact the Information Technology HelpDesk, Extension 2225.
The Instructional Technology Resource Center, located on the 1st floor of Trexler Hall, supports teaching and learning by providing hardware and software support and instruction for all types of instructional technology. ITRC staff offers training on both software and hardware for course related activities. The ITRC offers the campus a full suite of multimedia creation hardware from Apple and Dell as well as a full suite of media creation software from Adobe and Apple. The ITRC lab hours are Monday through Friday during normal business hours. The ITRC maintains a small pool of media equipment to assist in electronic media creation. These items include digital still cameras, digital video cameras (MiniDV), and traditional audiovisual equipment such as audiocassette recorders and overhead projectors.
As part of the Information Technology – Instructional Technology Team - ITRC staff directly supports instructional activities in the classrooms through planning, installation, user training and maintenance of the Technology Classrooms. ITRC staff also offers training to departments or individuals to help them become comfortable and proficient in the use of Technology Classrooms and related instructional technologies. ITRC staff also assists faculty in the selection of, production and testing of new technologies (such as Podcasting, Vlogs, iPod Video, etc.) for use in instruction.
Information Technology also supports telephone services including voice mail for all faculty, staff, and students. A comprehensive Faculty/Staff/Student directory is available via the Web and published each September. A central receptionist is available by dialing ext. 0. All departments have direct dial numbers. A central voice directory is available by dialing ext. 2066 then pressing the * key. All telephone problems are reported to the main HelpDesk number. After 4:30 p.m. and on weekends, switchboard operations are at Campus Safety – Bowman Hall (ext. 0).
3.5.2 BOOKSTORE
The College's Bookstore is a retail operation located in the lower level of the Colket Student Center, providing students, faculty, and staff with textbooks, general books, Roanoke College memorabilia, gifts, clothing, and school supplies. Faculty purchases are discounted 10 percent (textbooks and sale merchandise excluded). Purchases for departments of school/office supplies, general books, clothing, and gifts will be discounted and may be charged by persons designated by the department chair. Persons charging items to an individual department account must have the appropriate account number with them, as this number must be entered into the cash register at the time of purchase. Special orders for general books may be made at the Bookstore.
3.5.2.1 TEXTBOOKS
All orders for textbooks and course supplies must be placed through the College Bookstore. Textbook orders should include lead author’s last name, title, ISBN, publisher, course information (department abbreviation), course number and section letter), and contact information. Faculty members should place their orders by sending an e-mail with this information to the textbook manager, Phil Atkins, at patkins@roanoke.edu, or by phoning the Textbook Department at (540) 378-5123. Order forms are also available on line at the Roanoke College website (see forms). If you require a paper order form, please contact the textbook manager. Textbook adoptions should be submitted to the textbook manager as listed below:

Desk and review copies are the responsibility of the faculty member; however, the Bookstore will be happy to provide contact information. Also, please note that the Bookstore returns unsold textbooks to the publishers five weeks after the start of each term.
3.5.2.2 FACULTY SUPPLY
Faculty and Staff can purchase any office supply items that are stocked in the Bookstore. Items that are not available in the Bookstore can be ordered from Boise/Office Max. Roanoke College has an agreement with Boise/Office Max to furnish office supplies to departments at special discount pricing. Usually the supplies can be delivered directly to the department the next business day after the order is placed. Each department should have a catalog with a complete list of products available.
3.5.3 FACULTY SECRETARIAL SERVICES
Departmental building secretaries are located in Lucas, Miller, Olin, Life Science, Trexler, Trout and West Halls; in the Courthouse; and in the Bast Center.
Copy machines for large copying jobs are located in the Print Shop. Scanning onto disks is available through Information Technology.
3.5.4 PRINT SHOP
The Print Shop, located in the ground level of Life Science Building, offers services which include copying, offset printing, and binding. All requests should be delivered to the shop with an accompanying "Print Request Form" at least five (5) business days in advance of the date needed. Material costs are charged to the ordering department.
3.5.5 LOST AND FOUND
Articles found at the College should be turned in immediately to the Colket Center.
3.5.6 DIRECTORY
A directory of faculty, staff, and students, including addresses and telephone numbers, is published each year and made available to employees and students. This directory is also available on the College’s webpage and portal.
3.5.7 COLLEGE MOTOR POOL
The College maintains a fleet of vans for use by faculty and staff while on College business. The Office of Campus Safety administers the motor pool. The user must supply an account number to which the mileage rate is charged. Reservations are made on-line at www.roanoke.edu. See Section 2.9.10 for driver qualifications.
Roanoke College will not be liable for fire, theft, damage, or personal injury involving employees' automobiles. Accidents should be reported to the Office of Campus Safety.
3.5.8 CAFETERIA (COMMONS) AND SNACK BAR (CAVERN)
The Commons offers continuous service of an “all you can eat” venue at a preferred rate for students, faculty and staff.
The Cavern offers self-service drinks, made to order subs, wraps and burgers with a take-out option. The Cavern is closed during the summer.
Meals may be purchased in either location with “Maroon Money” or cash.
The Manager of Cafeteria/Catering will assist in planning catered events.
3.5.9 MONTEREY
Monterey provides a comfortable area for small faculty meetings and social gatherings and temporary lodging for campus visitors such as people being recruited for faculty positions. Policies pertaining to the main floor use and the scheduling of that space are done through the Office of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the Administration Building, ext. 2204.
Policies pertaining to the use and scheduling of the lodging facilities on the second floor are done through the Coordinator – Campus Center/Student Activities, ext. 2307.
