4.10 ANIMALS IN THE WORKPLACE
Roanoke College seeks to provide a safe, non-threatening and healthy working environment for all employees, students and visitors. To assure the safety of our campus community, pets are not allowed in any college building with the following exceptions:
- Service Animals for individuals with disabilities will be allowed
- Pets of employees whose job requires them to reside on campus or faculty members in residence in a campus apartment may be allowed with proper authorization
Proper authorization must be obtained for pets meeting the exempt categories. Such pets most meet the guidelines described below.
Guidelines for Authorized Pets:
- Owners must comply with all State and City laws and ordinances governing licensing, vaccinations, and have proof of compliance available at all times.
- All authorized animals must be healthy and pose no health risk to humans as carriers of active infections, parasites, etc.
- Only clean, trained, well-behaved, non-aggressive animals are allowed on the premises.
- It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure that animals relieve themselves outside, and to clean up after the animal and dispose of the animal’s waste properly. All indoor accidents are also the responsibility of the owner and not the custodians.
- The supervisor of the work area is responsible for deciding the appropriateness of having an animal in the workplace and resolving any problems that may arise.
Individuals having a problem with an animal at work must take responsibility for bringing the issue to the attention of the animal owner or the animal owner’s supervisor. Animal owners must be respectful and responsive to their co-workers and colleagues by taking responsibility correcting any such problems.
