GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIPS

Fields: Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Engineering

Required: Strong commitment to career in one of the above fields; potential for making significant contribution in one's chosen field

Eligibility: Full-time matriculated sophomore or junior; grade point average of B or higher and in upper fourth of one's class; firm plans to achieve a Ph.D. (M.D. program does not qualify); U. S. citizen or resident alien

Award: Up to 300 scholarships, worth up to $7,500 annually

JACK KENT COOKE FELLOWSHIPS

Fields: All fields - graduate and professional study
Required: Potential to make significant contribution to discipline or to society

Eligibility: College senior; grade point average of at least "B"; plan to enroll full-time in graduate degree program; resident (or school) in Virginia, Maryland, or DC

Awards: Tuition and fees, plus stipend - renewable each graduate year

MADISON FELLOWSHIPS

Fields: Secondary school teaching of American History,
American Government, or Social Studies

Required: Pursuit of relevant master's degree (in history or political science, or in education--with relevant concentration, or Master of Arts in Teaching); must take 12 or more hours of work about U. S. Constitution; must subsequently teach one year for each year of the scholarship

Eligibility: Bachelor's degree by August 31 of year the master's program starts, or be teaching grades 7-12 in the fields above; U. S. citizen or national

Awards: 53+ fellowships, worth up to $24,000 for up to two years of study

MELLON FELLOWSHIPS

Fields: Ph.D. program in American Studies, Art History, Classics, Comparative Literature, Cultural Anthropology, English Literature, Foreign Language Literature, History, History and Philosophy of Science, Musicology,

Required: Program in field given above; prepare for college teaching/research career

Eligibility: College senior or recent graduate; high grade point average and high GRE scores, plus outstanding promise; U. S. citizen or permanent resident

Awards: 80 fellowships worth about $14,000 plus tuition and fees

NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS

Fields: Mathematical, physical, biological, engineering, and behavioral and social sciences, including history or philosophy of science; research-based doctoral programs in science education; computer and information science

Required: Plan graduate study leading to research-based master's or doctoral degrees

Eligibility: College senior (or first-year graduate student); ability-based awards; U. S. citizen or national, or permanent resident alien

Awards: About 1000 fellowships, worth $15,000 stipend plus tuition waiver

SOROS FELLOWSHIPS

Fields: Any academic discipline or professional field, including fine and performing arts

Required: Evidence of creativity, accomplishment, and commitment to U.S. Constitution; graduate school at accredited U.S. university

Eligibility: College senior (or in grad school 1-2 years); age less than 30; status as a "New American" (holder of Green Card, or naturalized citizen, or child of 2 naturalized citizen parents)

Awards: 30 fellowships, worth half-tuition plus $20,000 maintenance annually

TRUMAN SCHOLARSHIPS

Fields: Economics, education, government, history, international relations, law, political science, public administration, public policy, public health, agriculture, biology, engineering, environmental management, mathematics, physical and social sciences, technology policy, etc. -- public service career

Required: Attend graduate school to prepare for career in government or public service (including nonprofit and advocacy organizations); show leadership potential, intellectual strength, and ability to make a difference (e.g., community service record, proposed program of study)

Eligibility: Junior-level student, committed to career in public service; in upper quarter of one's class; U. S. citizen or U. S. national

Awards: Up to 80 awards ($3000 for sr. year, plus $27,000 for graduate school)

UDALL SCHOLARSHIPS

Fields: Natural sciences, social sciences, environmental and natural resource fields

Required: Outstanding potential and intent to pursue career in environmental public policy, or (if Native American or Alaska Native) pursue career in health care or tribal public policy

Eligibility: Matriculated sophomore or junior; GPA of at least B, and in upper fourth of one's class; U. S. citizen, U. S. national, or permanent resident alien

Awards: Approximately 60 awards worth up to $5000 -- one-year scholarship
