Deutsch 202

Intermediate German

Frühlingsemester 2008

Dr. Ogier

Purpose of the course: To review (and, in some cases, introduce) advanced grammatical structures such as the passive, the subjunctive, and indirect discourse; to improve aural comprehension; to continue to develop the linguistic skills necessary to deal with cultural situations; to introduce students to literary German and the strategies involved in reading literary texts for understanding.

Texts:

          Hering, et al., em Übungsgrammatik

Frisch, "Biedermann und die Brandstifter"

Dürrenmatt, Der Richter und sein Henker

Lab Materials:

          Film: NVA

Attendance: A large part of your grade (35%--see below) depends directly on your efforts in the classroom, and the rest of your grade depends largely on your knowledge of materials presented in the classroom, as well. You are allowed three absences. Upon your third absence, you and your advisor will receive a warning letter. Upon your fourth absence, you will be dropped from the course with a grade of DP or DF. As the final exam will include an oral component, it is to your advantage to use every available opportunity to hear and speak German.

Grading:

20%--mid-term exam

20%--final exam

20%--oral exam at end of semester

15%--average Extemporale Prüfung grade

25%--subjective grade based on classroom participation, improvement in communicative skills, quality of homework, attendance, humor appreciation, etc. This grade will not be lower than the average Ex grade. Nor will this grade be more than one whole grade higher than the average Ex grade. Thus, the average Ex grade, while officially only 15% of the total grade, determines the range of 40% of the total grade. You will periodically receive computer-generated grade sheets to let you know where you stand. Missing the final exam or the oral exam will result in an F for the whole semester.

Every Friday there will be an Ex or a schriftliche Arbeit. Exen cover everything discussed or read until the class before the Ex (inclusive). I discard the lowest Ex grade of the semester when calculating the average. Bear in mind, however, that absence for any reason qualifies as an F, so save that missed Ex for an illness, 50 Cent concert, or other emergency.

If you have an overwhelmingly convincing reason for missing the midterm, a make-up can be arranged. Airplane reservations (especially to anywhere tropical), papers due or midterms looming in other courses fall far short of being overwhelmingly convincing reasons.

The written part of the final exam will take place on Thursday, April 24 at 2:00 a.m.

My office is Lucas 202 and my telephone number is 375-2388. If it is before 9 p.m., you may call me at home--389-6525. My office hours will be posted on my door and my web site (http://www.roanoke.edu/forlang/ogier) once committee meetings and independent studies fall into place. E-Mail me at ogier@roanoke.edu .
