Intensive Learning Task Force

Minutes of the Meeting of
November 2, 1999

Present: Present: Crawford, Simmons, Lee, Hardwig

We discussed several issues that have been raised either by Curriculum Committee or on the floor of the faculty meeting in October, regarding IL.

1. All courses are required to have a final exam except for GST 400 courses. Are we asking that IL courses be another exception to that rule? We agreed that they probably would, but that we would look for consistency and assessment and evaluation that is integrated with each May course topic, goals, and teaching strategies. We do not preclude a final examination, in cases where it is appropriate and fits with the goals of the course. We will probably want to monitor the use of final exams or other methods of evaluation and make a report to ASC and/or CC after several years' experience with the courses.

2. Would IL courses meet ahead of May during spring semester for example, and if so, should students be notified of that fact? We have always had orientation sessions for international travel courses in May, but would the same hold for an on-campus courses where there was preliminary work to be done? We agreed that we should probably place some kind of notification to that effect for students. Methods suggested included the courses offered list, faculty postings next to offices, a WEB board with course requirements for May, or some preliminary contact with professor for reading lists, course requirements, etc.

3. The numbering system for IL courses. To what extent should we specify whether a course should be proposed as a 100-level, 200-level, or other level? We allowed faculty to decide for May of 2000. We decided that we would defer consideration of this until next year. We do not feel that there is any campus-wide consensus about how courses are numbered within departments and we want to be sure that we don't set a policy which could be construed as campus-wide in this regard. Therefore, we will defer until next year.

4. Several members of CC asked the question about each course: how is it intensive, and what makes it different from courses offered during the regular year? We agreed that we have attempted to answer this question for each course that has come before us so far, and we will continue to do so in subsequent years.

5. On the floor of the faculty meeting, the question of the five-year rule came up, for courses in the catalog. We are not sure how and if it will apply in this case, as the courses in the catalog are numbered IL 177-277-377-477. Are these similar then to GST 400, where topics are offered? Again, we will defer consideration of this until we see whether or not faculty are interested in offering the same topic more than once. We want to offer the flexibility for faculty to do so if they wish, but also to emphasize that it is not required that a faculty member repeat the same topic more than once. The soonest we could gain a clear idea of whether or not this is a problem will be 8 or 9 years down the road. We may want again to report to the appropriate college standing committee after we have had enough experience of the program to have a clear idea.

6. We considered the "Intensive Learning Program Assessment Plan," in draft form, and several suggestions were made for changes, which will be incorporated into the document. We will look at it again next week, along with considering policy recommendations about such matters as non-traditional students, independent studies and internships, and the like.

We meet again on Tuesday, November 9 in our regular place, the Dean's Conference Room, Ad Bldg, at 11:30 AM.
