Minutes of the February 2, 2000 meeting of the Intitutional Purpose Committee:
1. Greg Weiss is of the opinion that we need not concern ourselves with the expanded curriculum goals, at least not for now.
2. Since the group was so small we did not divide up to consider institutional and curriculum goals, but focussed instead on the curricular goals. Following Gordon's suggestion, we decided that instead of working with the present organization of topics and trying to tweak the language to fit the new mission statement it would be less work to reorganize the main headings, then see how much of the old material we could still use. We agreed that the curricular goals should track the mission statement as closely as possible. Accordingly, we proposed the following organization:
Preamble taken from the first paragraph of the mission statement;
Section addresing the "cohesive core of liberal arts" (primarily GST)
Section addressing the "habits of mind ...social well-being" (the distribution portion of gen. ed., including co-curricular and intensive learning)
Section addressing "specialized, career-oriented programs of study" (majors)
3. For the next meeting, everyone should prepare a draft of the currricular goals: use the outline above unless you have a better idea.
4. Next meeting will be at 3:30 Wednesday the 9th in the Alumni House.
Respectfully submitted,
Han Zorn, chair
