The CCLS Task force met on Thursday afternoon from 4:15 to 5:30.
1. Results of the Fall Term Survey:
Most responses were positive, except for the large block sessions. Noteespecially page 6, questions F7a, F7b regarding whether CCLS helped to knowfreshman advisees better than in previous years. Some advisors hadexperience with the "old" advising system, and were thus able to makecomparisons from one year to the next. Comments to open-ended questions aremixed.
2. Areas we can improve:
We need to work on the large block sessions.A concern was expressed that advisees might be "less connected" second term. How do we "spice up" second term?Should we move computer orientation to August? Students need to know thecomputer and e-mail system earlier than they do currently. Some advisors want to teach the material from the "large block" sessions intheir small advising group sessions. The hands-on, interactive and practical sessions are the most popular largeblock sessions. The major problems with the large block sessions are: they tend to be information delivery, topics are too remote for freshmen, speakers are"talking heads"."Living in a Campus Community" was particularly unpopular. Should we use aninspirational speaker? Should we break into small groups?
3. April Large Block Session on Service:
Show a short video on "Service at Roanoke" taken during the rest of thesemester?Have Paul Henrickson talk about service?Serve salad and sandwiches "family style" (a la Homeplace)?
4. Maroon Corps:
Important (helpful, at least) to have a good Maroon Corps member. We can "recruit" our Maroon Corps leader for next year.
5. The "Freshman Syndrome":
It is not "cool" to look like a freshman. It is "cool" to gripe about CCLS.This is probably the best advised, most knowledgeable freshman class ever.We need to let students know up-front and more clearly WHY they are requiredto participate in service, co-curricular activities, CCLS 101 and 102.It would be good to include important dates on the calendar in the CCLSHandbooks or to use a larger sized college or commercial planner (FirstVirginia Bank may have a free one).
6. Time for the next meeting of the CCLS Task Force:
Friday, March 24 at 3:00 p.m. in Crawford Formal Lounge (to follow-up on ourmeeting with all freshman advisors/other faculty members on Thursday, March16 at 4:15 p.m.).
