Co-Curricular Learning & Service Task Force

Minutes of the Meeting of
March 16, 2000

Present: This was a Faculty Forum to discuss CCLS Program - Attending were B.

1. The tentative list of CCLS sessions for 2000-2001 was discussed. Could advisors conduct their own sessions instead of using a largeblock session? Yes. Advisors need advice/training on goals, what to present, etc. Some sentiment expressed that 6 is too many large block sessions. Topics will be changed for next year, and presentation methods willbe improved. Goals of block sessions will be made more explicit next year. "Nuts and Bolts of Advising" and "Academic Integrity" are naturalsfor small group activities.

2. Survey discussed. Establishment of a strong advisor-advisee relation praised.

3. Other comments: Important to meet every week. Session with Bill Carico was criticized. Also, food arrangements were not satisfactory. Need to balance "how much is taught" with "how much is learned". Need to make the "Campus Community" session more participatory. Use "case study", for example? Maroon Corps need to play a larger role. Put CCLS participation in Maroon Corps job description? Need a variety of levels of computer workshops.

4. Reflection paper criticized. Move due date up a week. Do a better job of explaining the rationale of the reflection paper. Make directions more explicit. Alternatives for a reflection paper? Exit interview? Experiment with alternatives, then recommend.

5. Global question: put on spring survey. Is CCLS worthwhile? Fall survey did not ask this.

6. Bottom lines: Advisors know advisees much better than with previous systems. Better advisor-advisee relations, also. Best informed freshman class ever. How do we get freshmen to take more responsibility? Provide ways to help freshmen accomplish their service obligation. Offer a variety of workshops that could be used as co-curricularhours. Get current freshmen to provide advice on large block sessions. Provide positive reinforcement, not just penalties: Award for best service? Award for best reflection paper? Provide branches, choices. (I wrote this down, but don't remembernow what was meant.)
