Strategic Study Committee

Minutes of the Meeting of
September 15, 1999

Present: Gardner, Hardwig, Henrickson, Hill, Kidd, Larsen, McKee, Nazemi, Smith, Weiss (chair), Whitson

The meeting began at 12:45 p.m.

Kim Kidd was introduced as the student representative on the committee.

Although the committee will not meet every week, Monday at 8:00 a.m. was selected as the standard meeting time.

Gail provided an overview of the CCLS program as it has developed to thispoint. She distributed program brochures, talked about Service Day, and identified some of the kinds of questions (e.g., what exactly counts in fulfillment of co-curricular learning and service hours) that are surfacing. Paul also talked about Service Day and shared some of the experiences of the day.

Committee members discussed the manner in which students are informed about campus events that relate to co-curricular learning. Some good ideas were suggested. David and Ali will discuss these possibilities with Michael Santoroski and report back to the committee at the next meeting.

Greg, Gail, and Dan discussed the assessment mechanisms that have been administered thus far (a general service survey to all freshmen during orientation and Service Day surveys to first-year students (completed), to their advisors (in process), and to participating community group (questionnaire being developed). The general orientation survey also included some relevant items. At the next meeting of the committee, a master schedule of assessment activities for CCLS and intensive learning will be developed.

Greg reported that plans have almost been finalized for a consulting visit by Paul Fidler of the University of South Carolina for Monday, September 27th. He will share information about South Carolina's first-year student program (an outstanding program); meet in small group discussion with Gail, Ben, and Bill; and offer two sessions on outcomes assessment of CCLS.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:25 p.m.
