Are you thinking about applying for the JET Program? If you are an enthusiastic, motivated and dedicated individual why not embark upon a journey that will change your life?
The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program invites university graduates from overseas to participate in international exchange and foreign language education throughout Japan. Established in 1987, the program has earned a high reputation, both in Japan and overseas, for its efforts in youth and cultural exchanges, and has become one of the largest exchange programs in the world. JET Program participants work as either Assistant Language Teachers (ALT), who are placed mainly in local boards of education or public junior and senior high schools to assist with English-language education, or as Coordinators for International Relations (CIR), who work in offices of local government authorities or related organizations engaged in internationalization activities. Since the program's inception, over 44,000 people have participated in the program. There are currently 4,436 participants from 41countries, including 2,537 Americans.
The Program conditions are as follows:
- Salary is approximately 3,600,000 yen ($40,000) per annum after Japanese taxes are deducted;
- Health insurance is provided;
- Accommodations are arranged by host institutions;
- Round trip air transportation to Japan is provided;
- Duration is for one year, ending in July or August of the year following departure;
- Contract renewable for up to four additional years with the mutual consent of the contracting organization and the participant;
- Participants normally work a 35-hour workweek (Monday to Friday);
- Japanese national holidays (15 days), plus at least 10 additional days (usually 12 to 20) of paid leave;
- Participants are placed throughout Japan. Candidates can indicate placement preferences on the application form, but fulfillment of these requests is not guaranteed.
Applicants must:
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in any subject by July 1 of the year of departure;
- Be a citizen of a participating country (list at www.jetprogramme.org);
- Have excellent English skills;
- Have a keen interest in Japan;
- Be under 40 years of age;
- Not have participated in the JET Program since 2007, or for more than five years total;
- Not have lived in Japan for 6 or more years in total since 2000;
- TEFL qualification is helpful, but not required for ALT applicants.
A one year term on the JET Program could be just what you are looking for to broaden your horizons and take a different step in life.
