Applying
for the Major
A student
may submit an application for the major at any time after completion
of PSYC 101. Acceptance is given if the student has earned at least
a 2.00 GPA in all psychology courses completed at the time of the
application. The application is submitted to the department chairperson.
All
members of the psychology faculty serve as advisors to majors. The
student may select any faculty member as her or his advisor, subject
to limitations in the total number of advisees each faculty member
may accept. For a listing of the responsibilities of the advisor
and expectations of the advisee see "Advising."
A student
who plans to have a double major should work out a schedule with
her or his psychology advisor soon after becoming a psychology major.
Since
courses in many departments are offered only once a year, it is
necessary to plan one's total program well in advance. For example,
students seeking teacher certification must take the Research Methods
sequence (PSYC 200, and 420, or 430, or 440) before their senior
year because they must student teach in their senior year at the
same time of day that the methods courses are offered.
