Segnatura ceiling

RapSegnCeil.jpg (120471 bytes)*

The ceiling establishes the program of the Stanza della Segnatura.  It is divided into 9 compartments.  In the center is the papal coat of arms.  On the axis of each wall is a tondo (an image in a circular frame) depicting a personification of one aspect of learning (starting at the top of this image):   Theology, Justice, Philosophy, and Poetry.  In the corners are narrative images that link the branches of knowledge.  The Fall of Adam and Eve sits between Theology and Justice.   The Judgment of Solomon lies between Justice and Philosophy.  The Prime Mover is between Philosophy and Poetry.  Apollo and Marsyas lies between Theology and Poetry.  Between the tondi are 4 imitation marble reliefs paired with 4 imitation mosaic panels.
