Raphael's Setting
Disputa and School of Athens
Raphael, School of Athens
Raphael, Disputa
The Disputa and the School of Athens are complementary images, both formally and thematically. Both compositions are derived from the dominant form of the lunette shape: the curve. The figures in the Disputa are arranged in such a way that they echo the movement of viewers that enter the Stanza della Segnatura; that is, they move back into the space of the picture. The School of Athens suggests a movement forward into the space of the Stanza, again echoing visitors as they enter "through" the wall (via the door at lower left) into the space of the room.(3)
The Disputa symbolizes Theology or knowledge of the things of God. The School of Athens represents Philosophy, or the search to know human understanding.
