Math 131
Spring 2000
Homework #2
This is due Friday, January 28 at the beginning of class. It is worth 10 points. Papers turned in before class on Monday lose 3 points; papers will not be accepted after Monday. Write neatly or use a wordprocessor. Your grade will depend on the correctness of your work and how well you explain it. You may discuss your work with me but not with others in the class.
As we did for exercise 50 on page 16, translate the description into symbols (define your terms!) indicating who should get catalogs. (Hint: start with p = credit rating is good.)
Send catalogs to all customers whose credit rating is good if they have placed a
catalog order in the last six months, provided they have either purchased more
than $500 worth of catalog merchandise in the past three years or have moved
to a new address in the past year. Also, send catalogs to any other customers who
have purchased more than $500 of catalog merchandise in the past three years,
provided their credit rating is good.
For those who have not had Math 131, your symbolic description may not be very helpful. The table below is intended to be more readable. One simplification has been made to keep the table brief: in column 9, the dashes indicate that the information is irrelevant: if the credit rating is not good, a catalog is not sent regardless.
The table can be simplified further. For instance, columns 1 and 2 can be combined. These are the only columns starting with three Y's and they have the same decision (send the catalog). Therefore, the first two columns could be replaced with a single column having three Y's, a dash and the decision Y. Simplify the table as much as possible.
