Homework #4
Instructions. This is due on February 27
at the beginning of class. It is worth 20 points. Late papers lose per day
late. You must work by yourself, but feel free to consult with me. Explain what
you did and why you did it: good explanations are essential! Start early, ask
questions and do well.
Problems. In many applications of
calculus, you don't have a formula for the function you work with. Instead, you
may only have a small number of measurements. In this case, what you need to
know about calculus is more the concepts and definitions than the derivative
and integral formulas that make up so much of the typical calculus course. In
this assignment, you will work with exactly this situation. Along with
computing your estimates, you should draw a picture of the data and sketch
curves through the data points to illustrate what you are doing. Also, briefly
discuss what you have learned about the efficiency of golf balls and feet. In
particular, compare your golf ball to the baseball in exercise 33 (use the
answer in the back of the book) and compare the human arch to the wallaby
tendon in exercise 35.
Work exercises #34 and #36 on page 439.
