An MCSP Conversation Series Talk: "Standard Deviations - Flawed Assumptions, Tortured Data, and Other Ways to Lie with Statistics"

The MCSP Department invites EVERYONE to attend a talk presented by our very own Dr. Chris Lee, a math professor at Roanoke College. Have you taken INQ 240? Or any statistics course? Even if you haven't, this talk is for you! Why? We are faced with data every day of our lives - through the news, social media, and other sources. 
Abstract: Ideas in this talk are inspired by recent work of author Gary Smith.  In this era of big data a reasonable assumption is that we are better informed and that studies are producing more significant and meaningful results.  In this presentation I will challenge these assumptions - hoping to foster a healthy level of skepticism towards any sentence that begins "studies have shown..."
