The Office of Career Services maintains a library of print resources and a variety of handouts and other information on career fields related to Roanoke College majors and others. Additionally, you should find that many of the internet sites listed under Internet Sources (under Students) on our website are helpful in this regard.
DOES AN ADVISEE NEED GUIDANCE IN CHOOSING A MAJOR? OR ARE THEY THINKING OF CHANGING MAJORS?
The Strong Interest Inventory (SII) is a tool utilized by Career Services to help students recognize areas of strength within themselves. Some results should be apparent, but others may be subliminal and need to be brought to the surface. The SII is a secure online tool that students may complete from any computer with Internet access, upon receipt of user codes from Career Services. A professional staff member will then meet with students to review the resulting report, at which time options for the student will be discussed.
America's OneStop is a career information planning site that pairs well with My Next Move and the Strong Interest Inventory. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is another tool utilized by Career Services, to help students match their behavioral preferences with those required by certain occupational fields. The Myers-Briggs and Strong instruments complement each other and often will validate information learned by completion of both. Completion and interpretation of the MBTI is by appointment through Career Services. For more information on either of these career guidance tools, or to refer a student to complete either, contact Career Services at 540-375-2303, email@example.com.
Another great resource on career information and outlook for the future is the Occupational Outlook Handbook, provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
