Shadowing and Related Experience
Students are strongly encouraged to acquire experience in health care settings during their undergraduate years. The Health Careers Advising Board assists students in making contacts at local hospitals, clinics and other health-related settings. Shadowing opportunities and shorter-term placements are conducted through HCAB.
Roanoke College has established relationships with placement sponsors in anesthesiology, cardiology, chiropractic, dentistry, emergency medicine, internal medicine, neurology, orthopedics, osteopathic medicine, pediatrics, pharmacy, physical therapy, podiatry, surgery, veterinary medicine, nursing, public health, occupational therapy and diagnostic imaging.
Shadowing and related experience demonstrate to admissions committees that the student has practical skills, exposure to day-to-day medical practices and personal interaction with health-care providers. Successful shadowing and related experience frequently result in letters of recommendations directly from the clinical sponsor.
