She also earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Richmond Professional Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth University), and received a diploma from the Chicago School of Design. Slonem received a Bachelor of Arts from Tulane University and studied painting at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Since 1977, Slonem soloed in over 150 exhibitions at prestigious galleries. As a dissident, he escaped political persecution in four countries before coming to the United States and eventually settling in the Roanoke Valley. From President John F. He was a skilled draftsman, best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work. During his career, he created an estimated 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings.
