Barnes will give a talk on their 2023 book Fair Play: How Sports Shape the Gender Debate. For decades, women have been active participants in competitive sports, largely due to the protections afforded by Title IX. Fair Play delves into the journey of women's sports, from its inception to its current state as a battleground for equality. Despite society's evolving views on gender, sports still rely on a rigid binary understanding of sex and gender, leading to contentious debates on issues like bathroom access and transgender athlete inclusion. Barnes highlights cases of transgender and intersex athletes worldwide, critically examining how law and policy makers decide how and when athletes compete.
