Cultural Legacies of Contemporary Peru
What is this travel course about?
Peru was shaped by indigenous civilizations, colonial Spanish influences, and modern Western culture. We have come to encounter its cultural legacies and see how Peru maintains its’ unique identity while adapting to today’s global realities. This course will immerse you in the Spanish language and is designed to improve communication skills through conversation classes, cultural activities, service learning, and homestays with local families. We will be based in Cusco, the capital of the Incan empire and an important colonial city, and will visit nearby sites of interest including Tipon, Ollantaytambo, Chincero, and other locations in the Sacred Valley. There will be a weekend excursion to Machu Picchu. In order to gain a sense of the cultural and geographic diversity of Peru, we will visit Lima, the coastal capital.
Does this course fulfill any major/minor/concentration requirements?
This course can be a credit for the Spanish minor or an elective for the Spanish major. It also fulfills the May Term requirement to graduate with a Spanish major. Also, if a student is working towards the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Concentration, this May Term experience can be used to fulfill one of the electives

SPAN 202 or permission by the professor

$3,900
What costs are covered in my program fee?
Costs covered include airfare (from Dulles, Washington, D.C.), three group meals, Home Stays, fees for museums and historical sites like Machu Picchu, and Ground Transportation.
What other costs should I prepare for beyond my program fee?
Spending money to buy souvenirs, lunch, and dinners with peers, etc.
