Alumni Medalists

Why we're all proud to be Maroons

The Roanoke College Medal recognizes outstanding alumni whose professional accomplishments, community engagement and service to the College represent the ideals of leadership, integrity and citizenship that we, as Maroons, hold dear.

The medal is a bronze cast of the College seal. It symbolizes the lifetime accomplishments of the champions of Roanoke College—her alumni.

Dr. Rae Carpenter '49 - Alumni Medalist 2018

Alumni Medalist Dr. D. Rae Carpenter, Jr. '49 has a lifelong history with Roanoke College. Son of a Roanoke faculty member, he was born and raised on the campus and also earned his bachelor's degree in physics here. He was a faculty member of the Virginia Military Institute for 40 years and co-developed short physics courses that continue to be purchased and used around the world. He has devoted countless volunteer hours on behalf of Rotary International and his home church, Lexington Presbyterian. He has established an endowed scholarship at Roanoke to support students studying mathematics or physics.

Wes Graves '63 - Alumni Medalist 2018

Alumni Medalist A. Wesley Graves, VI '63 pursued a major in chemistry at Roanoke, but it was a class in finance that led him to choose a career in financial planning-a choice that could have taken him far from his roots on a cattle farm. Instead, he returned home to the farm and worked both as an analyst and a farmer. He advanced quickly in the financial field, and he has been recognized for high professional achievements. Graves has served in various volunteer leadership positions throughout Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, Virginia, and he has established an endowed scholarship at Roanoke to assist deserving students.
