Jesse Lee and Mary Elizabeth Lucado Award
A monetary prize given, by Joseph A. Lucado, through an endowment, to the outstanding senior in teacher education.

Outstanding Sophomore Health and Human Performance Major Award
This award recognizes a sophomore Health and Human Performance major who shows promise in the field of health and physical education through involvement in professional activities and service. To be eligible for the award students must have completed 13 course units, be in process of completing 4 courses in the major, and show a high degree of achievement in their academic work. G.P.A. requirement will be 2.75. The recipient receives a one-year membership in the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance and will be honored by having his/her name inscribed on the departmental Outstanding Sophomore Health and Human Performance Major plaque.

NASPE (National Association for Sport and Physical Education) Outstanding Student Award
This is a National Award that recognizes an outstanding student in our department. The selection is made by department faculty members. Students must be a member of the Association to be eligible.

VAHPERD Frances A. Mays Scholarship Award
This scholarship award ($250) is presented to a senior student majoring in Health and Human Performance; the recipient is selected by the VAHPERD Awards Committee from among the nominees submitted as Outstanding Major student from each college/university in Virginia. To be eligible, a student must be a member of VAHPERD and must submit a nomination form.

VAPERD Outstanding Woman Student Athlete - Individual Sport
This award is for a senior woman HPERD major and student-athlete who participates in an individual sport and who is interested in pursuing a career in HPERD and athletics. The recipient is selected by the VAHPERD Awards Committee, which will evaluate the candidate's leadership, academic excellence and character. Students must be a VAHPERD member at least a year prior to being nominated for the award. Nominations are made by the department faculty. The award consists of a plaque and $250. The student must be eligible to receive the award by May 31; the award cannot be carried over to a later date.

VAPERD Outstanding Woman Student Athlete - Team Sport
The criteria are the same as above but for a senior woman HPERD major, student-athlete who participates in a team sport.

NATA and MAATA HONORS and AWARDS

Each year the Mid- Atlantic and the National Athletic Trainers Association awards students who have excelled in the field of Athletic Training with scholarships assisting them with continuing their education in the field. The two organizations award undergraduate scholarships to undergraduate students who are currently pursuing a degree in Athletic Training and to college seniors who wish to earn a masters degree in the field. These students are required to meet certain criteria in order to be considered for the scholarships. Each of the following awards are presented to a selected student at the end of their academic year that has met the required criteria for each award listed below.

Jesse Lee and Mary Elizabeth Lucado Endowed Scholarship

One scholarship to a student in a teacher preparation program and majoring in physical education with a minimum 3.0 grade point average with preference given to those who are active in campus academic, social and sports life in leadership roles.

Daniel Poe Klein Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established by gifts from his parents, brothers David and Thomas, and friends in memory of Daniel Poe Klien, a member of Pi Kappa Phi.  It is presented annually to the male rising senior who has demonstrated outstanding talent in the field in the field of physical education and who has shown esemplary moral leadership in the college community.

AWARDS FROM THE MID- ATLANTIC ATHLETIC TRAINERS ASSOCIATION

 

  • Edward Block Undergraduate Curriculum Scholarship:

To be eligible for consideration an applicant shall have:

  1. Been a student member of the NATA for at least one year prior to their application.

  2. Distinguished academic credentials
    (a) Records of students shall be judged on his or her graduation and semester index at the end of the fall semester of his or her Sophomore or Junior year.
    (b) Students engaged in undergraduate programs requiring more than four years for a baccalaureate degree shall be considered for an MAATA scholarship during their third or fourth year.

  3. Performed with distinction as a member of the Student Athletic Trainer program in the major in which he or she has declared a candidacy. NOTE: The degree of the student's athletic training achievement shall be weighed at least equally with the degree of academic performance.

  4. Signified an intention to continue academic work toward the baccalaureate degree as a full time undergraduate student and have been judged capable of this study by the major professor, major department head, or dean of the college in which the candidate is enrolled.

  5. Indicated the intent to pursue the profession of Athletic Training as the means of livelihood.

  6. Conducted personal behavior, both on and off the field, in a manner which has brought credit to the candidate, the institution, intercollegiate athletics, and the ideals and objectives of American higher education.

  7. Participated in campus activities, other than academic and athletic training, in which there has been the opportunity to demonstrate qualities of leadership which serve as an example to fellow students.

NOTE: Need shall not be a factor in granting these MAATA scholarships; also the award of assistance from other sourced to an MAATA nominee will not make the recipient ineligible for an MAATA award. The recipient is expected to remain enrolled in an undergraduate program except for military service or church obligations.

  • Larry C. Sutton Postgraduate Scholarship

At present, a first place grant of $1,500 and a second place grant of $1,000 is being awarded annually to selected candidates in a college or university who have participated with distinction in a student athletic training program. This award is meant to encourage the continuing education of the individuals toward completion of a baccalaureate degree.

To be eligible for consideration an applicant shall have:

A.) Been a student member of the NATA for at least one year prior to their application.

B.) Distinguished themselves academically with an overall minimum accumulative grade point average of 3.0 (based on a maximum of 4.0) or its equivalent.

C.) Records of students shall be judged on their grade point index at the completion of the fall or spring semester of their undergraduate senior year. NOTE: An undergraduate transcript must accompany this application.

D.)Students engaged in undergraduate programs requiring more than four years for a baccalaureate degree shall be considered for an MAATA scholarship during their final year.

E.) Performed with distinction as a member of the Student Athletic Trainer program in the major in which he or she has declared a candidacy. NOTE: The degree of the student's athletic training achievement shall be weighed at least equally with the degree of academic performance.

F.) Declared their intention to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full time graduate student and have been judged capable of graduate study by their main professor, major department head, or dean of the college in which they are currently enrolled. The scholarship will be awarded upon proof of acceptance into an accredited postgraduate curriculum.

G.) Conducted themselves, both on and off the field, in a manner which has brought credit to themselves, their institution, intercollegiate athletics, and the ideals and objectives of American higher education. This includes demonstrated ability to uphold the NATA Code of Practice.

After satisfying the above requirements, consideration shall be given to the applicant's participation in activities other than academic and athletic training in which they have had the opportunity to demonstrate their qualities of leadership and serve as examples to their fellow students.

AWARDS FROM THE NATIONAL ATHLETIC TRAINERS ASSOCIATION

  • NATA Research and Education Foundation-Graduate Scholarship

To be eligible for consideration an applicant shall have:

A.) Student must apply to join the NATA by November 1 of the year preceding the scholarship.

B. ) Have an overall minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 (based on a maximum of 4.0) by the time of application as an undergraduate, from ALL institutions attended. Students may apply for this award during their final year of undergraduate work or prior to their final year of completion of their master's degree.

C.) Have performed with distinction as a member of the student athletic trainer program and in his/her major. NOTE: The student's athletic training achievement shall be weighed at least equally with his/her academic performance.

D.) Students shall be full time masters students during the upcoming school year. To receive the scholarship check, the student must provide proof of enrollment. Exception to this rule would be assignment to active military duty or other extenuating circumstances.
NOTE: The recipient of a graduate Scholarship is expected to remain enrolled in a graduate program except if assigned to active military service.

E.) Intend to pursue the profession of athletic training as the means of livelihood.

F.) Have conducted him/herself both on and off the field in a manner which has brought credit to him/herself, the institution, intercollegiate athletics, and the ideals and objectives of American higher education.

  • NATA Research and Education Foundation-Undergraduate Scholarship

To be eligible for consideration an applicant shall have:

A.) Student must apply to join the NATA by November 1 of the year preceding the scholarship.

B.) Be enrolled in an NATA approved curriculum or internship program.

C.) Students engaged in undergraduate programs may apply no sooner that their junior year or prior to their final undergraduate year. If enrolled in a program requiring more than four years to complete, application may be made after their third undergraduate year.

Students engaged in undergraduate programs requiring four years for a baccalaureate degree, may apply for this scholarship during their junior year or prior to their final undergraduate academic year.

Students engaged in undergraduate programs requiring more than four years for a baccalaureate degree may be considered for a scholarship after the completion of their third year.

D.) Have preformed with distinction as a member of the student athletic trainer program and in his/her major. NOTE: The student's athletic training achievement shall be weighed at least equally with his/her academic performance.

E.) Must be a full time undergraduate. To receive the scholarship check, the student must provide proof of enrollment. Exception to this rule would be assignment to active military duty or other extenuating circumstances.
