INQ/HNRS Student Planning Progress Information

Effective in February 2023, the way that General Education progress shows up in Student Planning (Self Service) in the Progress area has changed.

What's Different?

In the past, students would have to complete a Declaration of INQ Substitutions form to indicate which disciplinary courses were being used as substitutions for the 200-level INQ or HNRS requirements.  Now, potential substitutions are understood by Student Planning up front, so as you complete, register for, and even plan courses for future semesters, the Progress area will show where discipline courses will subsitute for those 200-level requirements.

Are There Limitations?

There are three main things to keep in mind.

  1. Some discipline courses could count for different 200-level requirements.  For example, MATH-111 is a possible substitution for either INQ/HNRS-240 or INQ/HNRS-241.  The Progress area will apply MATH-111 as an INQ/HNRS-240 substitution first, but if you later need to take INQ-240 and complete it, Progress will automatically use INQ-240 in the INQ-240 area and move your MATH-111 to be a substitution for INQ-241 instead.  The same applies for many science courses, such as CHEM-111, and whether it applies as a substitution for INQ/HNRS-250 or INQ/HNRS-251.
  2. The general education area in your Progress has five distinct areas, with four of them devoted to monitoring progress on the 200-level courses.  In order for general education to be completed, all five areas need to show as "Complete" in Progress.  Most notable is that the second section, Minimum 200-Level Courses, will make sure that at least one INQ/HNRS course is taken in the Math/Science division (programming limtations prevent that from being checked in the Math/Science area itself).
  3. Some special topics courses may count as a 200-level substitution.  If applicable, the instructor, advisor, or student will need to let the Registrar's Office know to apply an exception to your Progress tab to allow that course to count.  

How Do I Know What Courses Substitute for What?

The Preregistration Page on the Registrar's website at the bottom has several links to the Self Service catalog that searches for all courses that can possibly substitute for a given 200-level INQ/HNRS course.  From the catalog, you can also search for specific sections and register for them.  In addition, directly from within Progress, you can use the Search button in a specific area to find courses and sections that will substitute for what you need.  Finally, though the Registrar's Office no longer accepts them, the old Declaration of INQ Substitution form will still be available as a paper copy of possible substitutions.

What if I See Something Potentially Incorrect?

This is still a work in progress, but is immensely more powerful and useful than the past version.  The ability to see how your courses can be applied as substitutions live (completed courses, registered courses, and planned courses) can help you stay on track for graduation.  If you have a question that can't be resolved by you and your advisor, please email registrar@roanoke.edu and someone involved in the Progress revision implementation team will take a look!
