This May Term course examines the cultural, linguistic, and sociopolitical implications that contemporary Argentinean women have had on their society and how Argentineans today continue to shape their society and language. Alfonsina Storni, Victoria Ocampo, Evita Peron, Remedios del Valle, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner contributed significantly to the creation of the New Woman in Latin America in the 20th & 21st centuries. Using literature, historical accounts (women activism), newspaper articles, magazines, linguistics fieldwork, visits to museums and authentic conversations with local citizens, IL 377 highlights the importance of women changing gender stereotypes, how language is used, and questioning the public and private spheres by playing a more active role in the formation of a national identity. Students will experience Argentine culture and language through different cultural excursions to Mar de Plata, la Estancia, and different places in Buenos Aires.
