Mock Trial is a year-long competitive academic activity in which Roanoke College students simulate courtroom trials by taking on roles as attorneys, witnesses, and legal experts. Students prepare legal arguments, examine witnesses, and present cases before judges – often practicing attorneys or law professors – who evaluate their performance based on legal reasoning, courtroom decorum, and persuasive speaking.
Each year, students work from a fictional case provided by the American Mock Trial Association, which includes affidavits, exhibits, and legal precedents. Teams prepare to argue both sides of the case – prosecution/plaintiff and defense – requiring a deep understanding of legal strategy and adaptability.
Mock Trial competitions are organized at regional and national levels, with teams representing their colleges in structured tournaments. The program is a great way for students to develop critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork skills.
