"Whatever is un-Virginian is wrong!": Pro-South Paintings on the Eve of the Civil War
This public lecture will be delivered by Rachel Stephens (Assistant Professor of American Art at the University of Alabama and Tyson Fellow, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art). The lecture will be drawn from her current book project, "Hidden in Plain Sight: Slavery and Censorship in Antebellum Visual Culture". Dr. Stephens is the author of "Selling Andrew Jackson: Ralph E. W. Earl and the Politics of Portraiture" (University of South Carolina Press, 2018).
