Challenge yourself in a unique race organized by data science major Aleks Kozlowski '27. Weighted racing is a test of endurance, strength and speed. Competitors bring extra weight to carry while they tackle the course, whether it's a weighted vest, ruck/backpack, sandbag, hydration pack or other gear of their choosing. Creativity is encouraged. If you can carry it, it counts!
Points are calculated by multiplying the weight carried and the distance covered. Carry 10 pounds for 2.5 miles? You'll earn 25 points. Racers can do multiple laps in the time allotted and change up their weight for each lap.
Strategy comes into play. Carrying a heavier weight may slow your pace and limit your distance, while a lighter load lets you move faster but earns fewer weight-based points. Each choice affects your final score. The goal is to give competitors a chance to win with either speed or strength — allowing a powerlifter to compete on the same course as a distance runner.
The Roanoke Valley Weighted Race will take place on a 2.5-mile loop from River’s Edge North Park to Piedmont Park and back, following the scenic Roanoke River Greenway. Medals will be given for overall winners and age group winners, as well as patches for competitors who reach individual point milestones.
Weighted racing is an invention of the Kozlowski family and their race company, Human-Powered Endurance, which has put on events in the New England region. This is its first Virginia race. Aleks Kozlowski designed a database and score tracker for the event that he'll be applying to a research project in his sports analytics concentration.
A registration fee is required for the race. RC friends, faculty, and alumni get a discount with the promo code: MAROONS
