Sponsored by the Office of Campus Safety, this four-hour training will enable students, faculty, and staff to develop a higher degree of awareness of their environment. The Situational Awareness Specialist© (SAS) Professional Certificate Program is designed to educate individuals through contextual and practical activities in dealing with the dynamics of random and potentially threatening events. Practical Objectives Enable a mindset change Become a practitioner of the craft Become an asset to oneself and those around us Terminal Objectives Understand and describe the concepts of situational awareness including vulnerable vs capable, observation, behavioral analysis and practical travel planning Understand and describe the concepts of becoming a situational awareness practitioner including: gray-man theory, Hicks Law, tactical considerations and tactical reaction Understand and describe concepts and strategies of reacting to a terrorist or criminal threat, including: understanding basic terrorist/criminal threat characteristics and how to react. Course is Broken up into 5 Modules Introduction to Situational Awareness – Defining perceptional elements within the environment and enabling a survival mental state to allow effective focus during a crisis Understanding Threats – Gaining the ability to interpret criminal threats and pre-incident indicators Analyze Criminal Characteristics – Understanding victim selection and the physiological and psychological responses to a perceived threat Becoming a Practitioner – Applying the gray man theory and tactical considerations in the environment Reacting to an Active Attacker – Understanding basic active attacker characteristics and planning Expected Outcomes Increase safety and reduce injuries in the workplace, enable community members to develop a safety mindset which can better help anticipate and manage a conflict Improved response measures when dealing with crisis
