Do I need to submit an IRB Form?

In general, if your research project involves human subjects, you must complete either the Exempt Registration Form or the Expedited/Full Application Form prior to the start of any research activities (More information).

Which Form do I need to submit?

There are two different forms for Roanoke College's Institutional Review Board. If your research project involves human subjects, you must complete one of the forms. 

1-Exempt Registration Form

2-Expedited/Full Application Form
Complete this form if your research involves human subjects and does not meet the criteria of one of the federal Exemption Categories

While response times may vary, in general, Expedited Reviews will be returned within 7 business days of receiving a complete application; and Full Reviews will be returned within 30 days of receiving a complete application. Projects that met the Exempt Form criteria can generally be completed within a few business days AS LONG AS ALL MATERIALS REQUIRED ARE SUBMITTED.

How do I distribute material to the Roanoke College community? (Faculty, Staff, Students)

Anyone planning to send research related material (i.e. a survey, a survey link, an invitation to participate in a research project, etc.) to Roanoke College students, faculty, or staff must first obtain approval as part of the review.  In addition to the human subjects protection review done by the IRB, requests to send material to members of the Roanoke College community will be reviewed by several administrative offices. Your survey must have a Study Information Sheet as an introduction in order to be distributed to a campus group.

Approval for electronic distribution of material to a Roanoke College group is a Two-Step process:

Step 1: Complete the online form;

Step 2: Email a copy of the material you want to distribute (PDF or Word) to IRB@roanoke.edu AND IR@roanoke.edu

 
Your application will not be processed until both steps are complete.

To start the approval process for distributing material through the Roanoke email system, please complete either the Exempt Registration Form or the Expedited/Full Application Form from above. Your survey must have a Study Information Sheet as an introduction in order to be distributed to a campus group.
