Spaces and Facilities
If you have the curiosity, we have the facilities
-
Quantitative PCR
Using quantitative PCR, students and faculty ask and answer a range of questions from how do genes control root structure or vertebrate embryonic development to where do cryptic, rare species live.
-
Greenhouse Space
In our 1,000 square feet of greenhouse, we have a diverse collection of species from around the world along with research space for faculty-student collaboration.
-
MinION Sequencer
Students and faculty have the ability to quickly sequence DNA in real time using a MinION sequencer with nanopore technology. The instrument is capable of sequencing DNA or RNA and can sequence PCR amplicons to fragmented genomes, helping students and faculty answer an endless array of genome, cell function, and biodiversity-related questions.
-
Microscopy Facility
Our modern microscopy facility allows students to see the unseen using confocal, fluorescence, phase contrast, and bright-field microscopy. Our students have opportunities to illuminate their futures while asking questions about embryonic development and animal physiology.
-
Digital Fish Collection
Decades in the making, we have over 36,000 fishes from nearly 500 unique species in our fish collection. Many are endemic to freshwater streams of the Southeastern United States. With the fish collection now digitized, there are questions waiting to be answered. Check out the Roanoke College Digital Fish Collection (click here), and map (click here).

Local Forests and Streams
With our location between the Appalachian and Blue Ridge mountains, there are extensive tracts of forest and miles of streams right outside our doors for field labs and research projects.
