Before you hire a student employee:
- Make sure your available positions are included in an approved departmental staffing plan. Departmental staffing plans are due in spring for leadership approval. If you're unsure whether your staffing plan allows for your proposed hire, contact HR or your team leadership for more information. For help with a short-term need, occasional event support, or a specific project requiring less than 40 hours of work, request a Roanoke Rover to assist.
- Connect job responsibilities to learning objectives. As the basis for your job description, consider how the responsibilities of this position contribute to departmental goals as well as your candidates' long-term professional development. Using NACE competencies, identify several ways that your new hire's role will help them to develop professional skills in areas such as communication, leadership, and critical thinking.
- Craft a detailed job description. A robust job description gives candidates a clear understanding of how they can contribute to a department as well as how the role can support their own professional development. Using the job responsibilities and learning objectives, start building a job description that includes a position overview, key responsibilities, candidate requirements, and a hiring timeline where possible. Not sure where to start? Visit our Student Employee Supervisor Handbook below for additional recommendations or contact PLACE at place@roanoke.edu.
- Determine your hiring timeline. On-campus jobs must be posted in Handshake for a minimum of 5 business days. PLACE recommends a posting window of 7-30 days to promote consistency among postings and higher applicant traffic. Where possible, include your hiring timeline and point of contact in the job description so candidates know what to expect for application follow-up.
If you have never posted a position in Handshake before, please submit a job posting request form or contact PLACE to request access to Handshake following a brief training.
