A message from President Shushok
November 14, 2022
Dear Maroons,
It is with deep sadness that I write to you about the distressing news from the University of Virginia, where a shooting occurred late Sunday evening, killing three people and injuring several others. At this time, the names of the victims have not been released. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of those who died, and we extend prayers and support to those who were injured. Our friends and colleagues at UVA and in Charlottesville can also count on our care and assistance as they grieve in the coming days.
I understand how disconcerting this news is to hear and want you to know that you are not alone. I cannot overstate how important it is to take care of yourself and seek support as needed. I’ve listed several important resources for students and employees below.
At times such as this, it’s important to remind our campus community about how the College communicates when something urgent is happening. Maroon Alerts are our primary method of communication in an emergency. All students are automatically enrolled in Maroon Alerts. Faculty and staff are included if a cell number is on file with HR. Web alerts and social media posts are used as well. It’s also important to share information with others wherever you are.
Our campus safety officers train for a wide range of scenarios, and we have excellent support from local authorities as well. The Salem Police Department has already reached out to our Campus Safety office today to let them know they are aware of the UVA situation and will be doing increased patrols around campus. As a reminder, you should always call 911 in the case of an emergency and, for non-emergencies, you can call Campus Safety at 540-375-2310. Please reach out if you detect suspicious behaviors.
We can always count on Maroons coming together in difficult moments like this one. Take care of each other and yourselves.
Warmly and with hope,
Frank
