Center for Policy, Ethics, and Law
Connect | Serve | Prepare
Mission
The Center for Policy, Ethics, and Law (C-PEL) is a collaborative hub for research and learning that enhances the educational experience at Roanoke College and contributes meaningfully to the surrounding community. It will connect students to professional networks, support public service engagement, and prepare them for ethical, purpose-driven careers in policy-related fields.
Vision
C-PEL aims to unite Roanoke College students and faculty with regional professionals and organizations. Guided by the College’s “Freedom with Purpose” mission, the Center will focus on providing resourceful, informed, and responsible citizens through three primary aims – Connect, Serve, and Prepare.

Connect
C-PEL will foster informed citizenship by building interdisciplinary networks with academics, public servants, nonprofits, and businesses. It will host workshops and events to showcase research on pressing policy, ethical, and legal issues such as sustainability, healthcare, education, foreign policy, and criminal justice.
Serve
To cultivate responsible citizenship, C-PEL will promote public service through internships, service learning, and community-based projects. It will support student involvement in courses, initiatives, and research that address local needs, including data analysis for government and community organizations.
Prepare
C-PEL will equip students for careers by offering leadership development and training in ethical and legal decision-making. It will provide workshops, interdisciplinary courses, and career exploration opportunities for students across all majors, helping them connect their interests to the broader policy landscape.
Future Impact
We envision C-PEL as a vital part of Roanoke College’s future – strengthening regional partnerships, supporting interdisciplinary innovation, and preparing students for impactful careers.
