Carilion Scholars

Carilion Scholars is a workforce development program that offers students a direct pipeline to rewarding careers in health care. Through a partnership with Carilion Clinic, Roanoke College juniors get exclusive opportunities for hands-on, paid internships in Carilion's leading hospital facilities. Internships are in both clinical and non-clinical roles, giving students from a variety of majors the chance to gain real-world experience and jumpstart their careers. Carilion’s selection process prioritizes in-demand jobs with the goal of hiring interns full-time after graduation.

  • Guided professional development before and during placement
  • Weekly advising meetings with Professor Shannon Anderson, Roanoke's senior director of strategic health initiatives
  • Options to continue interning through the summer and next school year for juniors (assuming positive experience and performance)
  • Guaranteed job interviews for seniors in the program with the goal of hiring for full-time employment

Three graduates of the first class of Carilion Scholars now work full-time for the hospital system — and one will have her nursing education paid for by Carilion after her first year of employment. One alum is working on Capitol Hill, and another earned a full-ride MPH scholarship

Applications are now being accepted for the 2026-2027 school year. Current sophomores who will be juniors that year should contact Professor Shannon Anderson for more information.
