Rob Gourdie, Ph.D., is the Director of the Center for Vascular and Heart Research (CVHR) at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute (FBRI) in Roanoke and Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics at Virginia Tech. His diverse research efforts extend from understanding how heart cells communicate with one another, to the development of anti-cancer drugs, to developing novel methods designed to deliver those drugs to cancer cells. A devoted teacher, he has mentored numerous post-doctoral researchers, medical school residents and fellows, junior faculty, and graduate and high school students.
A scientist/entrepreneur, he has founded, or co-founded, companies involved in both basic and applied medical research. He is a recent recipient of a prestigious National Institutes of Health Outstanding Investigator award. He is an elected Fellow of the American Heart Association and a senior member of the National Academy of Inventors.
He did his undergraduate and graduate work in New Zealand before post-doctoral research at University College London. Prior to taking up his current position at the FBRI, he served on the faculty of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
